A fire pit or outdoor fireplace does something no other backyard feature does: it pulls people in. It extends the evening, changes how you use the space in fall and winter, and gives the yard a center of gravity that everything else can organize around.

At Pristine Acres, we design and build custom fire pits and outdoor fireplaces throughout Northern Virginia. Gas fire pits, wood-burning fireplaces, full stone masonry structures, custom fire pit builder work for open patios — we’ve done all of it. Every project is built to fit the property, the architecture of the house, and how the client actually uses their outdoor space.

We handle design, permitting, and installation as one team.

What We Design & Build

Custom Fire Pit Design

Fire pit shape and size follow from the space, not from a catalog. We build round fire pits for yards where seating all-around makes sense, rectangular pits for more formal patio layouts, and freeform designs where the surrounding hardscape calls for it.

Fuel source is a practical decision we’ll walk you through. An outdoor gas fire pit is the most convenient option — instant on, no wood storage, easy to control. Propane works well where a gas line isn’t accessible. Wood-burning gives you the traditional experience: the smell, the crackle, the aesthetic. Each has trade-offs and we’ll help you pick the right one for your property.

We integrate fire pits into the surrounding hardscape design from the start. Built-in seating walls, low-voltage lighting, and material selections that tie back to the patio and the house.

Custom Outdoor Fireplace Construction

An outdoor fireplace is a bigger structural commitment than a fire pit, and it earns it. It anchors the outdoor space, blocks wind for the seating area in front of it, and functions as a proper focal point year-round.

We build outdoor fireplaces in stone, brick, and stucco — traditional styles that fit Northern Virginia’s residential architecture, and cleaner modern profiles for newer construction. An outdoor stone fireplace with a full chimney is the most common build we do in this category. We also do built-in firebox designs that sit flush with a patio wall.

Options include built-in seating, wood storage compartments, decorative mantels, and television enclosures. We coordinate all of this in the design phase so nothing gets retrofitted awkwardly later.

Materials & Finishes

We work with granite, limestone, bluestone, and fieldstone for masonry structures. Each has a different look and weathers differently over time. We’ll show you samples in context — how they read against your house exterior, your patio surface, the surrounding landscape.

Heat-resistant pavers and veneers are used where the surface is close to the flame. We don’t cut corners here because the wrong material creates maintenance problems within a few seasons.

Custom metalwork — grates, burners, fire ring enclosures — is fabricated to fit the structure. We don’t use off-the-shelf components in a custom build.

Integrated Outdoor Living Design

A fire pit or fireplace that’s designed in isolation from the rest of the yard usually looks like it was added as an afterthought. We design fire features as part of the full outdoor living scope: the patio layout, the outdoor kitchen, the pergola or pavilion overhead, the lighting, the plantings around it.

If you’re building a new patio and want a fire feature as part of it, that’s the right time to do it. The material selections, the seating configuration, and the lighting get planned together, not layered on one at a time.

If you’re adding a fire feature to an existing outdoor space, we assess what’s there and design something that reads as intentional, not tacked on.

Why Invest in a Custom Fire Pit or Outdoor Fireplace?

A fire pit or outdoor fireplace does more than provide heat—it creates atmosphere. These timeless features encourage conversation, connection, and comfort. Here are just a few reasons to invest in a custom fire feature from Pristine Acres:

  • More months in the yard. In Northern Virginia, a fire pit or outdoor fireplace extends your outdoor season from March through November. Some clients use theirs year-round with the right setup. Without one, most yards effectively close after Labor Day.
  • A reason for people to stay. A fire feature changes the dynamic of an outdoor gathering. People sit around it, stay longer, talk more. It’s a simple thing that makes a real difference in how the yard gets used.
  • Control over the experience. Gas fire pits give you instant on and precise control. Wood-burning gives you the sound and smell that gas can’t replicate. You’re not choosing between good and better — you’re choosing based on how you want to use it.
  • Low Maintenance, High Impact: With durable materials and efficient designs, your fire feature requires minimal upkeep.
  • Low upkeep. A properly built masonry fire feature — right materials, right drainage, right construction — requires very little maintenance. The investment is in getting it built correctly the first time.

Our Process: Bringing Your Vision to Life

Request A CONSULTATION
Step 1: Consultation & Design

We start with the site. We look at the existing hardscape, where the seating area is or will be, how the space connects to the house, and what kind of fire feature makes sense for the property. From that, we develop a design with material selections before any work is permitted or contracted.

Step 2: Precision Craftsmanship & Construction

Our masons and builders handle the structural work: foundation, masonry, gas or wood-burning system, metalwork, and any integrated features. Fire pit and outdoor fireplace installation in Northern Virginia requires permits in most jurisdictions — we manage that process. You work with one team from start to finish.

Step 3: Final Detailing & Walkthrough

When the build is done, we walk through the fire feature with you: how to operate it, what maintenance it needs, anything to watch for in the first season. We don’t hand over a manual and leave.

Why Choose Pristine Acres for Fire Pits & Outdoor Fireplaces?

Pristine Acres is a full design-build firm. We design the fire feature and we build it, with the same team throughout. If you’ve worked with contractors before where the design gets handed off to a crew who’s never seen the plans, you know why this matters.

  • Award-winning outdoor design. Our work has been recognized across Northern Virginia for design quality and craftsmanship. The portfolio is the best evidence of that.
  • We know the permit requirements. Fire pits and outdoor fireplaces in Fairfax, Loudoun, and Arlington counties each have their own setback rules and fire safety codes. We handle this on every project.
  • Integrated scope available. If you want the fire feature designed alongside a new patio, outdoor kitchen, or pavilion as a single project, we can do that. Most of our fire feature clients are part of a larger outdoor living build.
  • No templates. Every fire pit and fireplace we build is designed for the specific property — not pulled from a standard set of plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a custom fire pit or fireplace cost?

Pricing varies based on size, materials, fuel source, and complexity.

Do I need permits for an outdoor fireplace?

Yes, in most Northern Virginia jurisdictions. Fairfax, Loudoun, and Arlington counties all require permits for permanent outdoor fireplaces, and each has specific setback requirements from property lines and structures.

Fire pits have different rules depending on whether they’re permanent masonry builds or freestanding units. We assess what’s required for your specific project and handle the permit applications. HOA approval may be required separately — we’ll tell you upfront if that applies to your neighborhood.

Which is better: a fire pit or an outdoor fireplace?

It depends on how you want to use the space and what the yard allows.

A fire pit works better for social gatherings where you want seating on all sides. It’s lower-profile, fits more naturally into an open patio layout, and is generally more affordable to build.

An outdoor fireplace is the right choice when you want a strong visual anchor, better wind protection, and a more formal seating arrangement in front of it. It’s a larger build and a bigger footprint, but it functions well as the backbone of a covered outdoor living area.

Some properties end up with both, as we built for the Great Falls Retreat client. We’ll give you a recommendation based on the actual site after we walk it.

How long will the project take?

A standalone fire pit installation typically takes 4 to 8 weeks from permit approval. A full outdoor fireplace with masonry construction runs longer, often 2 to 4 months depending on complexity and county permit review times.

When a fire feature is part of a larger patio or outdoor living build, the timeline is set by the broader project scope, usually 3 to 6 months. We give you a realistic schedule during the design phase.

What fuel source should I choose?

Gas is the most popular choice we see. An outdoor gas fire pit or fireplace gives you instant ignition, precise flame control, and no ash or smoke management. It requires a gas line run to the feature — we coordinate that as part of the build.

Propane is the right choice when a gas line isn’t accessible or practical. The experience is similar; you’re managing tank refills instead.

Wood-burning gives you something gas can’t replicate: the smell, the sound, the feel of a real fire. It requires more management and a wood storage solution. Some clients specifically want this and nothing else will do.

We don’t push one over the other. The right answer depends on how you’ll use it, what the property allows, and what you actually want the experience to be.
